※ Cheaper Shopping from July: New 4.9% VAT in Austria
Starting July 1, 2026, a permanently reduced sales tax rate of 4.9% (down from 10%) will apply to selected staple foods in Austria.

Dairy products (milk, yogurt, butter) and fresh chicken eggs

Fresh and chilled vegetables (e.g., potatoes, tomatoes, lettuce, carrots) as well as frozen vegetables

Fresh fruit (e.g., apples, pears, stone fruit)

Basic grain products (rice, wheat flour, wheat semolina)

Unfilled and uncooked pasta, as well as bread and pastries (e.g., Semmeln, Salzstangerl)

Table salt
Meat, sausages, cheese, coffee, tea, and restaurant visits will remain at the 10% or 20% VAT rate.
